You Only Better

“You, Only Better” examines women’s stereotypes, both in media choice and in message. Quilt panels, consisting of images from beauty handbooks, self-help books, and Home Ec textbooks from the 1950’s and 1960’s, are stitched alongside pretty fabrics to create a traditional quilt. In these dated images women are instructed on how to dress, adorn, and behave themselves in order to conform to the high standards of society. The quilt remains in the pieced stage, unquilted, as if the women simply walked away from the silly notion.
